The young ag professional helping to pave the way for students in agriculture

Seven years ago, Sophie Haigh was a young university student from a sheep property on the Eyre Peninsula attending her first Growing the Future Conference looking to find a foothold in the agriculture industry.

Fast forward to 2024, and the Marketing and Communications specialist at Corteva Agriscience was invited to speak at the popular event staged at the picturesque Adelaide Oval.

“So many industries attended Growing the Future, from citrus to almond, along with event supporters like Corteva Agriscience, so it was a great turnout,” Ms Haigh said.

Organised by the Adelaide University Agricultural Students Association, Growing the Future is the premier networking event for aspiring young professionals in South Australia’s agriculture scene, drawing 250 students and industry representatives to this year’s event.

Ms Haigh, who studied Agricultural Science, said she wanted to canvas the wide variety of careers young people can pursue.

“As a student, you have no idea what you want to do after you graduate and many are unsure about the next steps to take,” she said.

“There’s a lot of pressure to figure it out in a short period of time.

“This event is great because it has different industries sponsoring tables so students have the opportunity to go up to the table and ask questions.”

After completing her degree, Ms Haigh started her career as Territory Sales Manager at Stoller Australia in a new field for her - horticulture.

“I had no experience in horticulture before I started working at Stoller Australia but I have developed a passion for it,” she said.

In 2023, Corteva Agriscience completed a global acquisition of Stoller, a leader in biologicals and plant physiology, and earlier this year Stoller Australia was integrated into the company. The move advances the development of Corteva Biologicals, a range of products spearheaded by the unique biostimulant Utrisha® N, and combines the technical excellence of Stoller with the research and development capability of Corteva.

Ms Haigh said it was an exciting time to be in agriculture and is looking forward to attending more Growing the Future events to help more young people find a career in agriculture.

“I love to talk to students about opportunities they can apply for after finishing university,” she said.

“It’s such a diverse and fulfilling career where no day is the same.”
